Wow! All that to get the airbags out? Looks like fun.

I was about to comment on the 911 in the background. Perspective is a funny thing.

Your photos and passion for work makes me want to buy a Mercedes. I’ve shopped at the local BMW dealership and frequent the local Porsche dealer for various events. It seems that these brands bring a level of service and professionalism that the lower brands don’t.
I love my ST, not because it is a Fiesta but because of the fun I have in it, but every time I drop it off for service, I look into the shop and....

Someone shipped you a RHD dashboard by mistake?

It’s actually not terrible. And there's no labor time, so I get paid as much time as it takes me.

there's no silly beetles in my shop!

Yup. Exactly right.

actually it's just upside down in that photo. Airbag recall.

You really should get the porter to press those wrinkles out of that shop cloth. Standards, my good man.

I wonder what that dashboard would cost as a NOS part, surprised they didn’t do something goofy like replace the whole unit.
Reminds me of when my first W212 had a creaking noise in the rear deck area (later determined to be plastic expanding and making noise with temperature changes, design flaw). One remedy they tried was replacing the sun shade, something like a $1200 part, wasted.

Tried. You just can't find good help these days.

Oh boy. Not cheap I'm sure. My guess, 4-5k?

My brother had an ‘83 300d with a veggie oil conversion that needed suspension work. The dealership and techs treated him like he had bought a brand new car from them.
Mercedes techs are no joke.
Unfortunately, Mercedes engineers are out of their fucking minds.

Holy jesus. Almost all of our are not dash out operations.

That looks pretty fun!

Dang. I only get paid about 2 hours to do the same amount of work to an Infiniti M series. I might need to go back to Merc. Then again I can get it done it 38 minutes...

Neither are ours. This is the only one I think.
![]() 04/25/2019 at 13:39 |

Yeah that's what most of ours are like. There's no short cuts for this one. I've never had the dash out of one so I'm taking my time.

Ah ok. That is good. though I imagine there are less plastic things to break than on old Subarus.
![]() 04/25/2019 at 14:13 |

There is a fair amount of plastic, but it's extremely high quality and much of it is leather wrapped.

Ah yeah that makes sense

How so? I mean, are we talking Audi RS4 timing chain levels of insanity?
![]() 04/25/2019 at 15:00 |

No one can ever reach Audi levels of insanity.

No short cuts on the Infiniti. I have done soooooo many of them that I just know the ins and outs of airbag replacement.

Ahh. Not really much for shortcuts on ours either. From what I hear, guys are getting anywhere from 7-15 hours on these.

Speaking only from the customer side of things, the Mercedes dealership experience at both my local dealers is excellent, and not just because one of them has an espresso bar with a barista....I love having the floor-to-ceiling window into a near-spotless shop. BMW is very good too. Audi was....eh, fine . Also, visiting the service department at my local Toyota dealer is always a pleasant, professional experience, and another really open, well-run shop, although they did fuck up a simple repair once (but eventually made it right).
